Day Trip from Fes to Ifrane – Morocco's Little Switzerland

Private Day Excursion with LGBTQ Morocco Tours

Overview

Escape the medieval intensity of Fes for a day and discover one of Morocco's most unexpected landscapes on this private excursion to Ifrane with LGBTQ Morocco Tours. Perched at 1,665 metres in the Middle Atlas Mountains, Ifrane is a town unlike any other in Morocco: neat red-roofed chalets, manicured parks, clean wide boulevards, and a cool alpine climate have earned it the nickname "Little Switzerland" — and the comparison is genuinely apt.

Built by the French during the Protectorate period as a mountain retreat, Ifrane has retained its European character while being entirely Moroccan in its rhythm and daily life. The town is home to Al Akhawayn University, a prestigious English-language institution, and its student population gives it a young, vibrant energy. In winter, Ifrane's proximity to the Michlifen ski resort makes it a popular destination for Moroccan families; in summer, it is a cool green refuge from the heat of the plains.

The journey from Fes passes through the ancient Azrou cedar forest — home to one of Morocco's most beloved wild animal populations: the Barbary macaque. These playful monkeys are habituated to visitors and can often be seen at remarkably close range along the forest road, making them one of Morocco's most delightful and unexpected wildlife encounters.

Full Day Itinerary

Depart Fes in the morning and drive south into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road climbs steadily through rolling oak and cedar woodland, and within an hour the city is far behind and the air noticeably cooler and cleaner. Your first stop is the Azrou cedar forest — a magnificent ancient woodland of Atlas cedar trees, some hundreds of years old, that forms part of the vast Ifrane National Park.

Stop at the roadside near Azrou, where a resident troop of wild Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) — the only primate species native to Africa north of the Sahara — can usually be found. These remarkable animals are social, inquisitive, and entirely at ease around humans, and watching them interact, groom each other, and play in the treetops is a genuinely memorable wildlife experience. Do not feed them, but feel free to photograph them from close range.

Continue south to Ifrane, arriving in time for a morning stroll through the town centre. Visit the famous stone lion sculpture — a 1930s carving from a single block of stone that has become the town's symbol — and explore the main square with its Swiss-style architecture and flowered gardens. Al Akhawayn University's attractive campus is open for a walk, and the town's cafés serve excellent coffee and patisserie. In spring and summer, the surrounding meadows and parks are green and flower-filled; in winter, the snow-dusted rooftops are magical.

After lunch (not included) at a local restaurant, spend time exploring the edges of Ifrane — the Oum Er-Rbia river springs nearby, where crystal-clear water bubbles up from the earth, are a short walk from the town centre. Optional excursion to the Michlifen ski area (15 minutes away) for the views over the crater bowl. Return to Fes in the late afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Ifrane from Fes?

Ifrane is approximately 65 kilometres south of Fes — about 1.5 hours by vehicle through the Middle Atlas Mountains.

When is the best time to visit Ifrane?

Ifrane is beautiful in every season. Spring brings wildflowers and lush meadows; summer offers a cool escape from the heat; autumn has beautiful golden foliage; and winter can bring snow, making the town look genuinely alpine. The cedar forest and macaques can be visited year-round.

Are the Barbary macaques guaranteed to be seen?

Sightings are very common, as the macaques are habituated to the roadside and regular feeding. However, as wild animals, their location can vary. Our driver knows the best spots in the forest to find them.

Can we combine this with a visit to Volubilis and Meknes?

Yes, but this would make for a very full day covering considerable distance. A more comfortable option is to do Volubilis and Meknes as a separate day trip. Contact us to discuss the best combination for your schedule.

Is Ifrane safe and comfortable for LGBTQ+ visitors?

Yes. Ifrane is a university town with an international and open-minded atmosphere — one of the most relaxed and comfortable towns in Morocco for all travellers.
