Day Trip from Ouarzazate to Aït Ben Haddou
Private Day Excursion with LGBTQ Morocco Tours
Overview
Discover one of Morocco's most iconic and visited historical monuments on this private day trip from Ouarzazate to Aït Ben Haddou with LGBTQ Morocco Tours. Just 30 kilometres northwest of Ouarzazate, the fortified ksar of Aït Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and arguably the most visually spectacular mudbrick architecture in all of Morocco — a towering labyrinth of earthen towers, granaries, and fortified houses perched dramatically above the Ounila River.
Aït Ben Haddou has served as a backdrop for some of cinema's most memorable scenes, from Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones, Babel, and The Mummy — and standing within its ancient walls, it is easy to understand why directors keep returning. The ochre towers glow golden in the morning light, the narrow alleyways twist through centuries of history, and the view from the granary at the top reveals a vast panorama of the surrounding desert plains.
This excursion can be combined with a visit to the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate or the Atlas Film Studios, making for a full day of cinematic Moroccan history.

Full Day Itinerary
Depart Ouarzazate in the morning and drive the scenic 30-kilometre route northwest along the Ounila Valley to Aït Ben Haddou. The approach to the ksar is spectacular — crossing the ancient river ford (or a modern footbridge in high water) and looking up at the cluster of tawny earthen towers rising against the blue desert sky. Your guide will meet you at the entrance and lead you through the ksar's main gate into a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and vaulted passageways.
Explore the various residential kasbahs within the ksar — some still inhabited by a small number of families, others converted into artisan workshops and small museums. Climb to the upper granary at the very top of the hill for sweeping panoramic views over the Ounila Valley, the surrounding desert plains, and the distant peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. Your guide will share the remarkable history of the ksar: its role as a stopping point on the trans-Saharan caravan route, the rise of its ruling Glaoui family, and the extraordinary process of earthen architecture construction and maintenance.
Return to Ouarzazate in the early afternoon, with the option to add a visit to the Taourirt Kasbah — the former palace of the Glaoui family within Ouarzazate itself — or the famous Atlas Film Studios, where sets from Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and dozens of other productions are still on display.
