Day Trip from Ouarzazate to Dadès Valley & Gorge – 3-Hour Canyon Hike

Private Day Excursion with LGBTQ Morocco Tours

Overview

Experience one of Morocco's most dramatic natural landscapes on this private full-day excursion from Ouarzazate to the Dadès Valley and Gorge with LGBTQ Morocco Tours. The Dadès Gorge — Gorges du Dadès — is a spectacular canyon cut by the Dadès River through the High Atlas limestone, featuring extraordinary twisted rock formations, sheer canyon walls, and a winding mountain road that clings to the cliff face in a series of breathtaking switchbacks. A 3-hour guided hike through the canyon floor brings you up close to the gorge's most dramatic geological features.

The Dadès Valley that leads up to the gorge is itself strikingly beautiful: a wide, fertile river valley lined with mud-brick Berber villages, pink almond blossom in spring, and the ever-present backdrop of the High Atlas peaks. The route from Ouarzazate passes through the Skoura oasis and the Valley of Roses, adding two more of southern Morocco's most celebrated landscapes to an already spectacular day.

This is an ideal excursion for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to experience the raw geological drama of the Moroccan interior beyond the tourist trail.

Full Day Itinerary

Depart Ouarzazate in the morning and drive east along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs. Pass through the Skoura oasis — with optional stop at the Amridil Kasbah — and continue into the Dadès Valley, a wide green corridor between the High Atlas and the Jbel Saghro ranges. Drive through the Valley of Roses, where thousands of Damask rose bushes line the riverbanks and the villages produce rosewater, rose oil, and rose-petal products sold throughout Morocco and beyond.

Continue up the Dadès Valley as it narrows and the road begins to climb. Stop at Boumalne Dadès for a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the entire valley system from above. Continue into the gorge itself, where the canyon walls close in and the road begins its famous series of hairpin bends — a dramatic engineering achievement that clings to the sheer canyon face, offering vertiginous views down to the river far below.

Begin the 3-hour guided hike through the canyon. The trail follows the Dadès River upstream through increasingly narrow and dramatic scenery. The highlight is the famous "monkey fingers" — a series of extraordinary rock formations created by differential erosion of the canyon limestone, producing twisted, organic shapes that bear a striking resemblance to grasping hands and curled fingers. The hike continues through the narrows where the canyon walls tower overhead, before returning to the trailhead by the same route.

After the hike, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant within the gorge (not included) before the return drive to Ouarzazate, arriving in the late afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Dadès Gorge from Ouarzazate?

The entrance to the Dadès Gorge is approximately 120 kilometres east of Ouarzazate — about 2 hours driving via the Dadès Valley road.

How difficult is the 3-hour hike?

The hike is moderate in difficulty. The trail is relatively level and follows the riverbed, but the terrain is rocky and uneven in places. Good walking shoes or hiking boots are recommended. The hike covers approximately 8–10 kilometres round-trip.

What are the "monkey fingers"?

The "monkey fingers" (doigts de singe) are extraordinary rock formations created by centuries of water and wind erosion of the gorge's limestone walls. The twisted, rounded pillars and overhanging rocks bear a remarkable resemblance to human fingers, and they are the gorge's most photographed geological feature.

Is the drive up the gorge road safe?

Yes. The winding road through the gorge is well-maintained and perfectly safe for private vehicles. It is, however, very narrow in places and requires careful driving — which is another reason why a private vehicle with a professional local driver is strongly recommended over self-driving.

Can this be combined with the Rose Valley festival in April?

Yes. The Rose Festival (Fête des Roses) takes place annually in Kelaat M'Gouna in late April or early May, and we can arrange for your excursion to coincide with the festival. Advance booking is essential.
