Day Trip from Ouarzazate to Skoura Oasis & Amridil Kasbah

Private Day Excursion with LGBTQ Morocco Tours

Overview

Explore one of southern Morocco's most beautiful and lush landscapes on this private full-day excursion from Ouarzazate to the Skoura Oasis with LGBTQ Morocco Tours. Just 45 kilometres east of Ouarzazate, the Skoura palm grove is one of the largest and most impressive in all of Morocco — an immense sea of date palms stretching across the Dadès Valley, sheltering dozens of ancient kasbahs and fortified farmhouses within its leafy interior.

At the heart of the oasis stands the Amridil Kasbah — one of the finest and best-preserved fortified manors in the country, still inhabited by the same family that built it more than 300 years ago. Unlike many kasbahs that have become tourist reconstructions, Amridil is genuinely lived-in, with traditional Berber furnishings, ancestral family portraits, and rooms that have been in continuous use for centuries. A guided visit here offers a rare and authentic window into the life of a southern Moroccan noble household.

The oasis itself rewards exploration: narrow trails wind between the palms past small Berber settlements, vegetable gardens, rose bushes, and pomegranate orchards. The light filtering through the palm canopy is extraordinary, and the sound of the irrigation channels provides a peaceful backdrop throughout.

Full Day Itinerary

Depart Ouarzazate in the morning and drive east along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs — Morocco's most scenic southern highway, following the northern edge of the Jbel Saghro massif toward the Dadès Valley. As you approach Skoura, the landscape transforms from arid desert into a rich, shaded canopy of date palms stretching to the horizon in every direction.

Your first visit is the Amridil Kasbah, entered through a traditional decorated gateway into a world of remarkable historical authenticity. Your guide — ideally a member of the family themselves — will lead you through the reception halls decorated with carved plasterwork and painted cedar ceilings, the private family quarters, the ancient granary storage rooms, and up to the rooftop terrace. From the top, the view over the palm forest is extraordinary: an unbroken green canopy stretching in every direction, punctuated by the towers of other kasbahs rising through the palms.

After the Amridil visit, spend the rest of the morning exploring the oasis on foot. Follow the shaded irrigation channels (séguias) between the palms, passing small Berber settlements where families tend their gardens and process their date harvest. The oasis is remarkably lush and diverse — as well as date palms, you'll find pomegranate trees, rose bushes, vegetable plots, henna plants, and ancient fig trees. Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local café within the oasis before the return drive to Ouarzazate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Skoura from Ouarzazate?

Skoura is approximately 45 kilometres east of Ouarzazate — about 45 minutes by vehicle along a well-maintained road.

Is Amridil Kasbah open to visitors every day?

The Amridil Kasbah is generally open daily, but hours can vary. We confirm availability before your visit. An entrance fee is payable locally.

Is this suitable for people with limited mobility?

The Amridil Kasbah interior involves some stairs, but the lower floors are accessible. The oasis paths are level and easy to walk. We can advise on the most suitable route for your needs.

Can we combine Skoura with the Rose Valley in a longer day?

Yes. The Rose Valley (Vallée des Roses) is just 50 kilometres further east, making a combined Skoura–Rose Valley day trip an excellent option. Contact us to arrange this.

What is the best time to visit Skoura?

Spring is particularly beautiful when the roses in the oasis are in bloom (April–May). Autumn and winter are also pleasant. Summer can be very hot, though the shade of the palm grove makes it more bearable than other desert locations.
