Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Ouarzazate – Draa Valley – Tamgroute – M'hamid – Erg Chigaga
Depart Ouarzazate in the morning and drive south along the Draa Valley, one of Morocco's most beautiful and historically rich river valleys. The road winds through kilometre after kilometre of lush date palm oases, ancient mudbrick kasbahs, and traditional Berber villages that have barely changed in centuries.
Stop at Tamgroute, home to the famous Zaouia Naciriya — a revered Islamic centre and library containing hundreds of rare medieval manuscripts on astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, and Islamic theology, some dating back over 700 years. Visit the unique green-glazed pottery workshops that have supplied Morocco's souks for generations.
Continue south to M'hamid el Ghizlane — the last town before the open Sahara, once one of the most important staging posts on the caravan route to Timbuktu. From here, begin the 4x4 crossing of the pre-Saharan terrain to reach the remote Erg Chigaga dunes, one of Morocco's two great erg dune seas (the other being Erg Chebbi at Merzouga). Erg Chigaga stretches over 40 kilometres of pristine, wind-sculpted sand, with dunes rising to 100 metres — and very few visitors.
Watch the sun set over the dunes and settle into your desert camp for a traditional dinner, Berber music around a fire, and an extraordinary night of desert silence and stars.
Overnight: Desert camp at Erg Chigaga
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 2: Erg Chigaga – Zagora – Tamnougalt Kasbah – Ouarzazate
Rise early to experience one of the Sahara's most spectacular sunrises over Erg Chigaga. After breakfast, make the return 4x4 journey toward M'hamid and drive north along the Draa Valley to Zagora — the legendary gateway to the Sahara marked by the famous "Timbuktu 52 Jours" sign, referencing the 52-day camel journey to Timbuktu that once began here.
Stop at Tamnougalt, one of the oldest and best-preserved kasbahs in the Draa Valley. This magnificent 16th-century mudbrick fortress, still partially inhabited, features an extraordinary warren of rooms, tunnels, and decorated chambers that offer a fascinating glimpse into pre-Saharan architecture and life.
Continue north along the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate, arriving by late afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is this a private tour?
A: Yes. This is a fully private 2-day expedition from Ouarzazate. You travel exclusively with your group in a private 4x4 with a professional multilingual driver.
Q2: How remote is Erg Chigaga?
A: Erg Chigaga is significantly more remote than Erg Chebbi (Merzouga). Accessible only by 4x4 from Foum Zguid or M'hamid, it requires a 1.5–2 hour desert crossing and receives far fewer visitors, offering a more authentic and solitary Saharan experience.
Q3: What is the Tamgroute library?
A: The Tamgroute Zaouia Naciriya contains one of Morocco's most significant collections of ancient manuscripts — over 4,000 books and documents on theology, astronomy, mathematics, and history, some written on gazelle skin. It is one of the most remarkable cultural sites in southern Morocco.
Q4: What is special about the Tamnougalt Kasbah?
A: Tamnougalt is one of the oldest and best-preserved kasbahs in the Draa Valley, built in the 16th century and still partially inhabited by the same family. Its labyrinthine mudbrick architecture, decorated doorways, and original rooms offer an extraordinary window into pre-Saharan Moroccan life.
Q5: Is a 4x4 essential for this route?
A: Yes. The journey from M'hamid to Erg Chigaga and back requires a 4x4 vehicle, as it involves crossing open desert terrain. All our Erg Chigaga tours use suitable 4x4 vehicles.
Q6: Can this tour be extended?
A: Yes. This expedition can be extended with additional nights at Erg Chigaga, camel trekking into the dunes, or combined with our longer Agadir-based tours.
