3-Day North Morocco Tour from Fes: Volubilis, Chefchaouen & Rif Mountains
Fes – Volubilis – Chefchaouen – Akchour Waterfalls – Rif Mountains – Meknes – Fes
Overview
Discover the captivating north of Morocco on this private 3-day tour from Fes with LGBTQ Morocco Tours. This itinerary combines two of Morocco's most iconic UNESCO sites — the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the legendary blue medina of Chefchaouen — with a spectacular natural hike to the hidden Akchour waterfalls deep in the Rif Mountains, and a return via the historic imperial city of Meknes.
Northern Morocco is a world apart from the desert south: lush, green, and dramatically mountainous, with a distinct Berber-Andalusian cultural identity. The Rif Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to Chefchaouen's impossibly photogenic blue-washed alleyways, while the cedar-covered hills and olive groves of the Middle Atlas frame the magnificent Roman mosaics of Volubilis — the best-preserved Roman site in North Africa.
Day two is devoted to nature: a guided hike to the Akchour waterfalls, one of northern Morocco's best-kept secrets, where the Oued Farda river cascades through a narrow limestone gorge in the Talassemtane National Park. This is Morocco at its wildest and most beautiful.
LGBTQ Morocco Tours creates private, safe, and welcoming journeys across all of Morocco's regions — and the north is one of our favourites.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Fes – Volubilis – Chefchaouen
Depart Fes in the morning and head northwest across rolling olive-green hills to Volubilis — the remarkably well-preserved ruins of a Roman city that once served as the western capital of the Roman Empire's Mauritania Tingitana province. Wander among triumphal arches, basilicas, and the famous decorated floors of intact Roman mosaics depicting mythological scenes. The site's remote hilltop setting, with sweeping views over the surrounding plain, makes it one of the most atmospheric ancient sites anywhere in the world.
Continue northwest to Moulay Idriss, the sacred hilltop town that cradles the tomb of Morocco's most revered founding saint — once closed to non-Muslims but now open to respectful visitors. Climb to the viewpoint above the white-domed town for panoramic views before continuing into the Rif Mountains.
The winding road climbs through cedar forests and mountain villages before descending into the valley of Chefchaouen — the Blue Pearl of Morocco. As you enter the medina, the city's signature blue-and-white architecture unfolds in a series of increasingly photogenic alleyways, squares, and fountains. Check in to your boutique riad, wander the medina at your leisure, and enjoy dinner in the main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam.
Overnight: Dar Echchaouen or similar boutique riad in Chefchaouen
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 2: Chefchaouen – Akchour Waterfalls Hike
Today is dedicated to one of northern Morocco's finest natural experiences: a hike to the Akchour waterfalls in the Talassemtane National Park, just 30 minutes' drive from Chefchaouen. The hike follows the turquoise waters of the Oued Farda river upstream through a narrow limestone gorge, passing crystal-clear pools and cascading streams beneath overhanging cliffs draped in wild fig trees and oleander.
The walk takes approximately 3 hours at a leisurely pace, ending at a series of beautiful waterfalls where the river drops through a series of rocky terraces into deep emerald pools. This is a favourite spot for local families on weekends, and the combination of the rushing water, dramatic gorge walls, and dappled forest light makes it one of the most beautiful natural settings in all of Morocco.
Return to Chefchaouen in the afternoon for more time to explore the medina's hidden corners — the old Jewish quarter, the Spanish mosque viewpoint, and the artisan shops selling locally woven wool and hand-embroidered textiles.
Overnight: Dar Echchaouen or similar boutique riad in Chefchaouen
Meals: Breakfast included
Day 3: Chefchaouen – Rif Mountains – Meknes – Fes
After breakfast, depart Chefchaouen and drive east through the heart of the Rif Mountains — a dramatic landscape of steep forested ridges, terraced hillsides, and remote Berber villages rarely visited by tourists. The Rif range forms the northern wall of Morocco, separating the Mediterranean coast from the interior plains, and the crossing offers spectacular mountain scenery throughout.
Descend from the mountains to Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities, built as a grand capital by the powerful Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. Visit the monumental Bab Mansour gate — arguably the most magnificent ceremonial gateway in all of Morocco — and explore the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, a serene and beautifully decorated royal shrine. Browse the Meknes medina and its covered souks before the final drive east back to Fes, arriving by late afternoon.
