Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Ouarzazate – Agdez – Draa Valley – Rissani – Merzouga Sahara Desert

Depart Ouarzazate in the morning and drive east through the historic gateway town of Agdez, perched above the confluence of the Draa and Tizi rivers and surrounded by some of the valley's finest kasbahs and palm oases. Continue along the Draa Valley, where the road winds through green oases and ancient fortified villages before the landscape gradually shifts to stony desert.

Pass through Rissani, a town of great historical significance — the birthplace of Morocco's current Alaoui royal dynasty and once the capital of the ancient Tafilalt kingdom. Browse the colourful Tuesday and Sunday souks (if your schedule allows) and visit the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, the dynasty's founder.

Continue to Merzouga and the magnificent Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon, mount your camel for a sunset ride across the golden sand sea, arriving at your desert camp as the sky turns crimson and violet over the dunes.

Overnight: Sahara Eden Camp or similar
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included

Day 2: 4x4 Adventure – Explore the Merzouga Desert Area

After watching the sunrise paint the Erg Chebbi dunes in extraordinary colours, enjoy breakfast at the camp and prepare for a full day of 4x4 desert adventure. Spend the day exploring the diverse landscapes surrounding Erg Chebbi:

  • The dune sea: Navigate the rolling dunes by 4x4, reaching viewpoints that reveal the full scale of this extraordinary natural wonder.
  • The fossil sites around Erfoud: Visit the area's famous fossil workshops, where ancient marine fossils embedded in the desert's ancient limestone are polished into stunning decorative and scientific pieces.
  • The desert oases: Discover hidden palm oases and small villages tucked between the dunes, where families have lived in harmony with the desert for generations.
  • Desert wildlife: Keep an eye out for desert foxes, sand vipers, and the remarkable variety of bird life that thrives in this seemingly barren landscape.

Return to the desert camp in the late afternoon for a relaxing sunset over the dunes and another night of Berber music and stargazing.

Overnight: Sahara Eden Camp or similar
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included

Day 3: Merzouga – Erfoud – Todra Gorge – Rose Valley – Amridil Kasbah – Ouarzazate

After a final desert sunrise, depart Merzouga and drive through Erfoud, where you can visit a fossil workshop before continuing to the stunning Todra Gorge. Here, sheer limestone walls rise over 300 metres above the narrow canyon floor, creating one of Morocco's most dramatic natural spectacles. Walk through the gorge, listen to the sound of the river, and take in the extraordinary scenery.

Continue into the Dades Valley (Rose Valley), famous for its pink damask roses (harvested each May), striking red rock formations shaped by millennia of erosion, and traditional Berber villages. Stop to explore the dramatic "Monkey's Fingers" rock formations and a traditional rose distillery (in season).

Before returning to Ouarzazate, make a final stop at the magnificent Amridil Kasbah in Skoura — one of the finest and most intact examples of traditional southern Moroccan architecture, still inhabited by the Nasiri family that has owned it for centuries. Return to Ouarzazate by early evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Is this a private tour?

A: Yes. This is a fully private 3-day tour from Ouarzazate. You travel exclusively with your group in a private 4x4 with a professional multilingual driver.

Q2: What does the full-day 4x4 adventure on Day 2 include?

A: The Day 2 adventure explores the dune sea, desert fossil sites, hidden palm oases, and surrounding desert landscape by 4x4. The exact route can be customised based on your interests — dune photography, nomad visits, fossil workshops, or simply exploring the vast desert.

Q3: Can I do a second camel ride on Day 2?

A: Yes. Additional camel rides can be arranged at the desert camp at an additional charge.

Q4: What is the Amridil Kasbah?

A: The Amridil Kasbah in Skoura is one of Morocco's best-preserved and most elegant traditional kasbahs, built over 300 years ago and still home to the same family. Its towers, interior courtyards, and decorated chambers offer a remarkable insight into traditional southern Moroccan architecture. A small entrance fee applies.

Q5: Is the Todra Gorge walk strenuous?

A: No. The walk through Todra Gorge is easy — it follows a flat, paved path along the canyon floor. The drama comes from the towering walls above you, not from the terrain underfoot.

Q6: Can this tour be extended or combined with other tours?

A: Yes. This tour can be extended with additional nights in the desert, or combined with our Ouarzazate–Erg Chigaga tour or our longer tours from Agadir.
