Overview
Journey from Ouarzazate to Fes across the most spectacular desert and mountain landscapes in Morocco on this private 4-day overland tour with LGBTQ Morocco Tours. This route is one of the great diagonal crossings of Morocco — beginning in the sun-baked kasbahs of the south, plunging into the Sahara Desert at Merzouga, and gradually climbing north through lush cedar forests and alpine mountains before arriving in the ancient imperial city of Fes.
Over four days, you'll experience an astonishing variety of Moroccan landscapes: the palm oasis of Skoura, the fragrant rose fields of the Dadès Valley, the towering slot canyons of Todra Gorge, the rolling dunes of Erg Chebbi, the geological wonders of the Ziz Valley, and the cedar and oak forests of the Middle Atlas. It is a journey that reveals Morocco's extraordinary geographic diversity in a way that few itineraries can match.
Day three in Merzouga is dedicated entirely to Saharan adventure — exploring nomadic communities, visiting the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia village, discovering ancient caravan mines, and watching flamingos at the desert bird lake. Optional quad bike and sand buggy rides add another dimension of adventure for those who want it.
LGBTQ Morocco Tours specialises in fully private, tailor-made journeys through Morocco's most remarkable landscapes, welcoming every traveller with warmth and professionalism.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Ouarzazate – Skoura Oasis – Rose Valley – Dadès Gorge
Depart Ouarzazate in the morning and travel northeast along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs — Morocco's most scenic desert highway. Your first stop is the Skoura oasis, a vast palm grove sheltering the exquisite Amridil Kasbah, one of the best-preserved fortified residences in the south. Wander through its reception halls and climb to the rooftop for views over the sea of palms.
Continue through the Valley of Roses, where thousands of Damask rose bushes line the riverbanks and terraced fields of traditional Berber villages. The valley is renowned throughout Morocco for its rose products — from rosewater and essential oils to rose-petal jam — and the local women are often seen harvesting the blooms in spring.
Arrive at the Dadès Gorge in the afternoon, where the Dadès River has sculpted a breathtaking canyon through the High Atlas foothills. The road winds dramatically up the gorge past extraordinary rock formations — the famous "monkey fingers" of twisted limestone — offering spectacular views at every turn. Enjoy an evening walk through the canyon before dinner.
Overnight: Riad Dadès Paradise or similar
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 2: Dadès Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Sahara Desert
After breakfast, continue north to the Todra Gorge, where the Todra River has carved one of Morocco's most dramatic natural wonders: a sheer-walled slot canyon just a few metres wide at its base, with cliff walls soaring 300 metres overhead. Walk through the narrows, listening to the rush of the cold mountain river, and admire the extraordinary geology of this ancient limestone formation.
Head east across the vast Tafilalet plains — one of the largest oases in the world — passing through Erfoud, famous for its fossil deposits and the annual date festival, before arriving at Merzouga on the edge of the Sahara. In the late afternoon, mount your camel for a magical sunset ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, one of Morocco's most iconic desert experiences. Watch the light shift from amber to crimson as the sun sinks below the dune horizon, then return to your private luxury camp for a traditional Berber dinner and live music around the fire.
Overnight: Sahara Eden Camp or similar private luxury desert camp
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 3: Full Day Sahara Desert Adventure – Merzouga
Today is entirely dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert region in depth. Rise at dawn for a sunrise walk to the top of a high dune and watch the Sahara light up in extraordinary shades of rose and gold. After breakfast at camp, your 4x4 driver will guide you on an immersive desert excursion covering the most fascinating corners of the Erg Chebbi region.
Visit the ancient caravan mines of M'Ifis, where coloured minerals have been extracted for centuries. Drive to the remote Gnawa village of Khamlia, home to descendants of sub-Saharan African slaves who maintain the hypnotic Gnawa music tradition — a rhythmic, trance-inducing genre recognised by UNESCO. Continue to Lac Dayet Srji, a desert lake that attracts flocks of pink flamingos and other migratory birds. Visit a traditional nomadic family in their tent to learn about life in the Sahara.
For those who want extra thrills, optional ATV quad bikes and sand buggies are available locally and can be arranged through your driver.
Overnight: Sahara Eden Camp or similar
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fes
Depart Merzouga after breakfast and begin the long but scenically magnificent northward journey to Fes. The route follows the Ziz Valley — a breathtaking corridor of emerald date palms running between dramatic desert cliff walls — before climbing into the Middle Atlas Mountains through Midelt, a high-altitude market town known for its apples and traditional woven carpets.
The road continues north through the Azrou cedar forest, an ancient woodland of Atlas cedar trees that is home to a famous troop of wild Barbary macaques. Stop to watch the monkeys and photograph the dappled forest light before continuing to Ifrane — Morocco's charming alpine resort town, dubbed "Little Switzerland" for its red-roofed chalets and manicured parks. Arrive in Fes by early evening, completing this remarkable cross-country journey from the Sahara to the imperial city.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is this a private tour?
A: Yes, entirely private. You travel exclusively with your group in a dedicated private 4x4 vehicle with a professional multilingual driver throughout all four days.
Q2: Does the tour end in Fes or can it end elsewhere?
A: The standard route ends in Fes. We can also arrange drop-off in Marrakech, Casablanca, or other cities — contact us to adjust the itinerary.
Q3: How many nights are spent in the desert camp?
A: Two nights are spent in the private luxury desert camp at Merzouga (Days 2 and 3), giving you a full day of Saharan exploration on Day 3.
Q4: Are the Barbary macaques in Azrou forest guaranteed to be seen?
A: The macaques are wild and free-roaming, but sightings are very common as they are habituated to visitors. Your driver knows the best spots in the forest to find them.
Q5: What is the best season for this tour?
A: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer ideal temperatures across all landscapes. Winter is also beautiful — the Sahara is warm by day, the mountains dramatic with potential snow — though mountain roads can occasionally close. Summer is hot in the desert (40°C+) but manageable with early starts.
