Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Agadir – Tafraout
Depart Agadir in the morning and head south through the Anti-Atlas Mountains toward Tafraout. The drive itself is a highlight — the road winds through spectacular mountain scenery, passing through the Ameln Valley with its dramatic granite peaks, traditional Berber villages, and terraced argan orchards. Arrive in Tafraout, a charming mountain town famous for its pink granite boulders, ancient painted rocks, and almond blossom festivals. Explore the town's souks and enjoy the tranquil mountain atmosphere.
Overnight: Traditional Kasbah or hotel in Tafraout
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 2: Tafraout – Igherm – Tata
After breakfast, continue south from Tafraout through increasingly dramatic mountain terrain. The road to Igherm passes through high mountain plateaux, remote villages, and panoramic viewpoints offering sweeping vistas over the Anti-Atlas range. Continue south to Tata, a hidden oasis town on the edge of the Sahara surrounded by palm groves and prehistoric rock carvings (petroglyphs) created by Saharan peoples thousands of years ago.
Overnight: Traditional Kasbah or hotel in Tata
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 3: Tata – Foum Zguid – Lake Iriki – Erg Chigaga
Depart Tata and head east toward Foum Zguid, a remote desert crossroads on the edge of the Saharan wilderness. From here, the adventure begins in earnest as you enter the vast dry lakebed of Lake Iriki — once one of the largest lakes in the Sahara, now a surreal flat expanse of cracked clay that stretches to the horizon, offering an otherworldly driving experience.
Continue across this ancient landscape to reach Erg Chigaga, one of Morocco's most remote and spectacular erg (dune sea), stretching over 40 kilometres of pristine Saharan sand. Watch the sunset paint the massive dunes in extraordinary shades of red and orange, then settle into your desert camp for a night of traditional music, stargazing, and Saharan tranquility.
Overnight: Desert camp at Erg Chigaga
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 4: Erg Chigaga – Tamgroute – Tamnougalt Kasbah – Zagora – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate
Wake to a spectacular desert sunrise over Erg Chigaga. After breakfast, depart the dunes and travel north through M'hamid — the last outpost before the Sahara — before reaching Tamgroute, home to a fascinating Zaouia (Islamic religious school) with a library containing rare medieval manuscripts on astronomy, philosophy, and the Quran.
Continue to Tamnougalt, one of the oldest and best-preserved kasbahs in the Draa Valley, with its labyrinthine mudbrick architecture and dramatic towers. Journey north through the Zagora palm groves and the lush Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley, before arriving in Ouarzazate for dinner and overnight rest.
Overnight: Riad in Ouarzazate
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 5: Ouarzazate – Aït Ben Haddou – Taznakht – Taliouine – Agadir
After breakfast, visit Aït Ben Haddou, the magnificent UNESCO-listed fortified ksar that has served as a backdrop for countless Hollywood productions. Wander through its ancient alleyways and climb to the granary for panoramic views over the surrounding desert plains.
Begin the return journey to Agadir via the Anti-Atlas Mountains, stopping first at Taznakht to visit the rug cooperative, where Berber artisans weave the region's distinctive geometric rugs using traditional techniques. Continue to Taliouine for a final visit to the saffron cooperative before completing the journey back to Agadir.

Q2: How remote is Erg Chigaga compared to Merzouga?
A: Erg Chigaga is significantly more remote than Merzouga. Accessible only by 4x4 from Foum Zguid or M'hamid, it sees far fewer visitors and offers a more pristine, wild Saharan experience. The dunes extend over 40 km of unbroken desert.
Q3: What is Lake Iriki?
A: Lake Iriki is a vast ancient dry lakebed in the Sahara, once one of the largest lakes in North Africa. Today it is a spectacular flat expanse of cracked earth stretching to the horizon, offering a surreal and unforgettable desert crossing.
Q4: Is a 4x4 required for this route?
A: Yes. Parts of the route — particularly the Lake Iriki crossing and the approach to Erg Chigaga — require a 4x4 vehicle. All our desert tours from Agadir use suitable 4x4 vehicles.

A: Yes. LGBTQ Morocco Tours can extend the itinerary, add overnight camel treks into Erg Chigaga, or adjust the route to suit your interests.
