7-Day Sahara Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech via Merzouga
Fes – Cedar Forest – Middle Atlas – Merzouga Sahara – Todra Gorge – Dadès Valley – Rose Valley – Ouarzazate – Aït Ben Haddou – Marrakech – Agafay Desert
Overview
This is the ultimate private Morocco desert tour — a sweeping 7-day journey from Fes to Marrakech that takes you through the very heart of the country, from the medieval imperial city of Fes to the golden dunes of the Merzouga Sahara, across the dramatic canyons of the south, and through the High Atlas Mountains before arriving in Marrakech. It ends with a sunset dinner in the Agafay Desert — a stunning rocky desert plateau just outside the city — making for one of the most memorable final evenings in travel.
Organised by LGBTQ Morocco Tours as a fully private experience, this 7-day itinerary covers the full spectrum of Moroccan landscapes: ancient cedar forests and Middle Atlas mountains, Saharan dunes and desert camps, spectacular gorges and rose valleys, UNESCO kasbahs and film-set plateaux, and finally the vibrant chaos and beauty of Marrakech. It is a journey that will leave you with a profound and lasting sense of Morocco's extraordinary diversity.
The Sahara segment is not a brief overnight visit — you spend two full nights at the Merzouga camp, giving you a complete day of desert exploration: nomadic families, Gnawa musicians, desert mines, flamingo lakes, and optional ATV excursions. The return journey through the Todra Gorge and Dadès Valley is one of Morocco's most scenic drives. And the final day in Marrakech, culminating in a sunset dinner in the Agafay Desert, is the perfect conclusion.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Fes – Cedar Forest – Middle Atlas – Merzouga
Depart Fes in the early morning for the long but scenically spectacular drive to the Sahara. The route passes through the Azrou cedar forest, where wild Barbary macaques inhabit the treetops and can often be seen at close range along the roadside. Continue south across the high plateau of the Middle Atlas Mountains, through Midelt, and into the dramatic Ziz Valley — a long, palm-lined corridor cutting through the desert cliffs. Arrive at Merzouga in the late afternoon, mount your camel, and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a magical golden sunset. Return to your private luxury desert camp for a Berber dinner, live music around the fire, and a spectacular night of Saharan stargazing.
Overnight: Sahara Eden Camp or similar private luxury desert camp
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 2: Full Day Sahara Desert Adventure – Merzouga
Spend a full day exploring the Merzouga desert region by private 4x4. Begin at dawn with a sunrise walk to the top of a high dune. After breakfast, set out on a guided desert excursion visiting the ancient caravan mines of M'Ifis, the Gnawa village of Khamlia (where descendants of sub-Saharan African slaves perform their mesmerising rhythmic music), Lac Dayet Srji (a desert lake attracting flamingos and migratory birds), and traditional nomadic families living in the desert. Afternoon is free for relaxation, sandboarding, or an optional ATV / sand buggy excursion through the dunes.
Overnight: Sahara Eden Camp or similar
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorge – Dadès Valley
Depart the desert after breakfast and travel west. Stop in Rissani, the historic birthplace of Morocco's Alaoui royal dynasty, and browse its ancient covered souk before continuing to Erfoud. Drive northwest to the extraordinary Todra Gorge — a sheer-walled slot canyon where the Todra River has carved a passage through the High Atlas limestone, with cliff walls soaring 300 metres overhead. Walk through the narrows, photograph the dramatic geology, and continue to the Dadès Valley for the evening.
Overnight: Riad Dadès Paradise or similar
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 4: Dadès Gorge Hike – Rose Valley – Amridil Kasbah – Skoura – Ouarzazate
After breakfast, take a guided 3-hour hike through the Dadès Gorge, exploring the famous "monkey finger" rock formations carved by centuries of wind and water erosion. The canyon walls are extraordinary up close, and the hike follows the river through increasingly dramatic scenery. Return to the vehicle and drive west through the Valley of Roses — the fragrant Dadès Valley famous for its Damask rose fields, rose cooperatives, and spring blossom festivals. Stop at the magnificent Amridil Kasbah in the Skoura palm oasis before continuing to Ouarzazate.
Overnight: Riad Dar Chamaa or similar in Ouarzazate
Meals: Dinner & Breakfast included
Day 5: Ouarzazate – Aït Ben Haddou – Tizi n'Tichka – High Atlas – Marrakech
After breakfast in Ouarzazate, visit the UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou, the stunning fortified ksar of mudbrick towers that has served as a location for films including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Mummy. Wander through the ancient alleyways, climb to the granary for panoramic views, and hear stories of the ksar's remarkable history from your guide.
Continue west and north over the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass — at 2,260 metres the highest road crossing in the High Atlas — with stunning views of snow-capped peaks and vertiginous valley drops. Descend through the foothills into the Haouz plain and arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon.
Overnight: Riad Aslal or similar boutique riad in Marrakech
Meals: Breakfast included
Day 6: Marrakech Cultural Guided Tour
Spend the day exploring Marrakech with a professional local guide. Begin at the Koutoubia Mosque — the city's iconic 12th-century minaret — before plunging into the labyrinthine souks of the medina: the dyers' quarter, the spice market, the metalworkers' alleyways, and the famous Mouassine neighbourhood. Visit the stunning Saadian Tombs, the beautifully restored Bahia Palace, and the Mellah (Jewish quarter). End the afternoon at the Djemaa el-Fna, the city's extraordinary main square, where storytellers, musicians, snake charmers, and street food stalls create one of the world's great spectacles.
Overnight: Riad Aslal or similar
Meals: Breakfast included
Day 7: Free Time in Marrakech – Sunset & Dinner at Agafay Desert – Airport Transfer
Enjoy a relaxed final morning in Marrakech — perhaps visiting the Majorelle Garden and Yves Saint Laurent Museum, or shopping for last-minute crafts in the medina. In the late afternoon, transfer to the Agafay Desert — a dramatic rocky desert plateau of grey stone and arid hills just 30 kilometres from Marrakech — for a sunset camel ride, traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars, and a final evening of Moroccan magic before your departure.
